developing the grand family

An introduction to some of our Grand family members who have developed their skills and progressed their careers within hospitality at the hotel. Using in-house training as well as external courses and masterclasses to help team members find their career paths within the industry, below are examples of team members who have began their journey in one hotel department and found their passion in another area of the hotel.

olivia odudu
marketing manager

Olivia joined The Grand, York in April 2016 as Conference Operations Assistant on a part time / flexible contract whilst studying at University. Upon completing her studies, she was offered a permanent full time role in September 2017 as Food and Beverage Coordinator, assisting the Restaurant Manager and the Marketing team in the execution of the restaurant calendar of events, small social media projects and the day-to-day running of the operation. Her creativity soon flourished and she was promoted to the role of Marketing Executive in February 2018, with responsibility for delivering and supporting the marketing plan across all areas of the hotel.

Taking the lead and driving all marketing and PR initatives forward as we found ourselves in the pandemic, Olivia was promoted to Marketing Manager in October 2020. She is now responsible for the full marketing function of the hotel, including the recruitment of two new team members.

Olivia is a prime example of a Grand family member who during a part-time role in the hotel found a career path perfectly suited to her. Expanding her qualifications, Olivia has since passed her CIM Level 4 Certificate in Professional Marketing with distinction and also become a certified search marketing specialist with the Digital Marketing Institute.

asako kendall
Quality & compliance manager

Asako moved to the UK from Tokyo and started her career at The Grand in February 2015 as part of our reception team. In April 2016, Asako moved to our Reservations department until August 2017. After a short time away from The Grand, Asako was welcomed back to into the reservations teams in March 2019 and by April 2020 Asako had been promoted to a Reservations Supervisor. A year later, in 2021, she was proudly promoted to Reservations Manager where she took care of the entire reservations team.

In February 2022, the hotel realised there was a need for a Quality and Compliance Manager to ensure the safety of both our guests and our team. Asako’s skills of organisation, familiarity of the hotel, eye for detail and process driven mentality meant she was perfectly suited to the role.

Asako is a clear example of progression at The Grand. Proving that a career in the hospitality industry does not have to be restricted to one department, Asako explored multiple departments to develop herself into the perfect candidate for her current role.
