Brewing up a proper proposal

Neal wanted an original way to pop the question to his girlfriend of two years and so got in touch with Yorkshire Tea in May last year to see if they could help. Happily, they did and created a specially made box with the words’ Marry Me’ in the place of the iconic brand’s name.

Jessica, who averages an impressive six to eight cups of Yorkshire Tea per day, first met Neal on a training day for Newcastle College, where they both work as lecturers.

On the day itself, Neal whisked Jess away for a romantic break at The Grand Hotel & Spa, York, Yorkshire's finest five-star luxury hotel, where the couple stayed at the very beginning of their relationship, the perfect setting for the proposal.

Before heading out for dinner at the hotel’s 3 AA Rosette restaurant, Hudson’s, Neal asked Jess if she’d like a cup of tea, a question which he already knew the answer to, and instead of the usual box of tea, presented her with the personalised box which had the ring nestled inside.

Neal said: “Jess is a big tea drinker, if you ask her if she wants a brew you can guarantee the answer will be a yes! So, when I began thinking about how I could pop the question, and make the moment as special as possible, it seemed like a no-brainer to collaborate with her favourite tea brand. I was delighted when they agreed to get involved and I really appreciate the help; I actually think Jess is more excited about the box than the ring!
“I had originally planned to propose in December but postponed it to just after Valentine’s Day to make sure it was perfect. I was so nervous, but think I kept my cool long enough to ensure it was a real surprise!”

Jess added “I had absolutely no idea Neal was going to propose, I was in total shock, but luckily we had chance to calm down with a brew afterwards. I really love the thought and effort he put into the proposal, which makes it extra special.”

Commenting on the brand’s involvement in the engagement, Laura Burton, Brand Manager at Yorkshire Tea said: “We pride ourselves on being the place where doing things properly here at Yorkshire Tea, so we were thrilled to be able to help Neal with his ‘proper’ proposal.  We wish the couple all the best, and hope they take us up on our offer to have the Yorkshire Tea band at their wedding.”

Maria Florou, General Manager of Grand Hotel & Spa, York said; “We are all about romance here at the Grand and we are thrilled that Neal has chosen our special venue to propose to Jessica.  We hope to welcome them back to celebrate their big day here with us.” The couple are yet to set a date, but one detail of the wedding has already been agreed – brews all round.
