The Grand Hotel & Spa Sets Tourism Goal in Far East
To coincide with the National Day of the People’s Republic of China on 01 October, The Grand Hotel & Spa, York has announced its commitment to becoming the ‘most China-friendly hotel in the north of England’.
The Grand – Yorkshire’s only AA-rated five-star hotel – has implemented a series of initiatives in order to achieve its goal of becoming the most China-friendly hotel in the north of England, including:
Employing a Mandarin-speaking member of staff, and putting six employees per year through Mandarin language lessons
Cultural awareness training for hotel staff
Creation of Chinese social media presence, across WeChat and Sina Weibo, and a Chinese language website
Provision of Mandarin visitor guides for the city of York
Mandarin-translated menus, and QR codes in the bedrooms to link directly to these
Signing the VisitBritain GREAT China Welcome Charter
Accepting China UnionPay
The hotel’s plans have been launched on the back of the VisitBritain GREAT China Welcome Charter, which aims to welcome 650,000 Chinese visits a year to the UK by 2020, worth almost £1.1 billion to the UK economy.
Philip Bolson, General Manager of The Grand Hotel & Spa, York, said: “We wholeheartedly support VisitBritain’s goal to make Britain the most welcoming European destination for the Chinese visitor, so much so that we’re going above and beyond to secure our position as the most China-friendly hotel in the north of England.
“We have made a commitment both in terms of staff hours, training, and financially to reach our goal. York is an incredible city for tourists, from the historic Minster to the iconic York City Walls quite literally on our doorstep, and we’re excited to welcome more visitors from the Far East to our home.”
Michelle Brown, Marketing Manager for Visit York, said: “China is now one of York’s key international markets for tourism and we’re committed to helping our hotels and visitor attractions to become ‘China Ready’. The Grand Hotel & Spa was one of the very first hotels in the city to successfully complete Welcome training for Chinese visitors, helping to deliver the goals of VisitBritain’s Great China Welcome programme. We’re delighted they are setting the standard for hotels across the North.”
The 01 October National Day starts a seven-day ‘holiday week’ celebration in China, allowing people to visit relatives and travel both at home and abroad.

The Grand Hotel & Spa, York, is part of the Splendid Hospitality Group. The hotel, which is York’s first five-star hotel and the only AA five-star rated hotel in Yorkshire, offers 107 elegant guestrooms and a full luxury experience.
The Grant Hotel boasts two restaurants: The Rise, its newly-opened terrace restaurant and bar which serves small plates designed for sharing and a variety of local beers and ales, and Hudson’s, the hotel’s three AA rosette restaurant, which re-opened in August 2017 following a renovation and change of location within the hotel.
The Grand Hotel is currently undergoing a £15 million redevelopment. In addition to the two new restaurants, an additional 101 new rooms will be added later in 2017.
This stunning £25m hotel opened in May 2010 following the extensive refurbishment of the former North Eastern Railway headquarters – one of York’s most iconic Edwardian buildings. The building opened in 1906 as a ‘Palace of Business’ for what was then one of the most powerful public companies in the country. Today it is the region’s leading luxury hotel and has established a global reputation for its first-class service, stylish bedrooms and unique historic atmosphere.
