The Shakespeare’s Rose Theatres celebrates official launch at The Grand

At the end of October, Europe’s first ever pop-up Shakespearean Theatre – Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre – officially launched at our hotel in York.

The local press, supporters of the event and York City Council were all in attendance and were greeted by a wonderful Waites band, who welcomed all visitors with the sounds of history as they made their way to the Grand Boardroom.

The event was in celebration of the Shakespeare Rose Theatre which will officially open next summer. The theatre, the first of its kind in Europe, celebrates the original Rose which was built in 1587 and rediscovered in 1989.

The area next to Clifford’s Tower will be transformed into a Shakespearean village, complete with an Elizabethan-style theatre modelled on the original Rose. Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre will also include a mock Tudor fairground, the best of Yorkshire’s food and drink, a range of free entertainment and an Elizabethan garden, created by a leading garden designer.

The make-shift theatre will be authentic to the era and more or less the same as in Shakespeare’s day with oaked-framed houses and reed-thatched buildings. Traditional in all ways, the pop-up event has already been proclaimed to be the event of the year in 2018.

Our luxury York hotel was delighted to hold such a historic and significant event in our splendid Boardroom. With a whole host of supporters and press in attendance, the historic Grand really set the scene for the official Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre launch. The event took place in our York hotels ‘Grand Boardroom’ – a vast, majestic room with floor to ceiling wood panelling and huge windows with views of the Minster and the City Wall. The grand interior and fantastic views make it the ideal location for any event, presentation or private function.

Philip Bolson, General Manager of The Grand York and Spa said, ‘We were very pleased to hold such a momentous occasion at The Grand. The Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre is a fantastic opportunity to showcase York’s art and culture scene at it’s very best and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.’

The season will begin on the 25th June 2018, with two well-known directors taking on the four plays. Damian Cruden will direct A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Macbeth, whilst Lindsay Posner will direct Richard III and the opening production of Romeo and Juliet.
